The word osteopathy originates from the two Greek words "osteone", which means structure, and "pathos", which means pain. Osteopathic treatment is based on the concept that the structure of the body affects how it will function and that it functions as a unified whole. In other words, if there is a problem or restriction in one part of the body, then all the other parts are affected in some way and often there is pain.

Structural Manipulation
Structural Osteopathy is a safe and effective 'hands on' therapy suitable for treating a wide range of pain and dysfunction in people. Problems in the musculo-skeletal system can disturb the circulation and nerve supply to any part of the body and affect any aspect of health. Mechanical problems can lead not only to aches and pains in joints and muscles, but also to disturbances in the internal organs and the way they function. Osteopaths work on body structure to restore the musculo-skeletal system of the body to a state of balance and harmony. The restoration and maintenance of good structural function is essential to good health.
The therapeutic value of Structural Manipulation
The neuro-musculo-skeletal system is the largest system in the body, constructed of muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and
neurological parts that co-ordinate the whole system. This system is what enables us to express our thoughts and
emotions. The cardiovascular, digestive, circulatory and neurological systems enable optimal function and
coordination for the movement and operation of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. Correct mechanical
functioning of this system, therefore is essential.
How Structural Osteopathy can help you
Osteopathy ensures harmony and balance to minimise wear and tear of this system. It is particularly
concerned with the relation between structure and function. Osteopaths use a wide variety of approaches
to treatment and can bring relief or improvement to many conditions affecting, for example, the elderly,
children, sportsmen and women and to problems that arise during or after pregnancy.
Conditions for Structural Osteopathy
• Sciatica
• Sports injuries
• Trapped nerves
• Frozen shoulder
• Tennis/Golfers elbow
• Neck pain
• Whiplash
• Occupational strain Joint pain/dysfunction - wrists, hips, knees ankles etc.
• Arthritis
• Postural problems
• Cellulite
There are several different techniques of Osteopathy Manipulation
• Soft tissue technique--This approach applies pressure to the muscle area around the spine.
It consists of rhythmic stretching, deep pressure and traction
• Muscle energy technique--With this technique, the patient is directed to use his or her muscles
from a precise position and in a specific direction against a counterforce applied by the doctor
• Thrust technique--This approach uses high velocity forces to restore motion to a joint to reduce
or eliminate the signs of tissue changes, asymmetry, restricted movement and tenderness. This is the "cracking"
technique of manipulation
• Counterstrain technique--During this approach, the patient is moved away from a position where motion
is restricted to one of greater comfort. This technique is good for an acute injury
